What's on offer
The prize is small but useful. To mark 25 Years of XBOX, the team is offering two Wildcards prize packages focused entirely on celebrating the passionate XBOX community. According to Impulse Gamer's rundown of the same announcement, each package includes 2x XBOX FanFest Sydney 2026 tickets, return economy flights and accommodation in Sydney where the winner is located outside New South Wales (T&Cs apply).
What that means in practice:
- Two winners in total. Each winner gets a pair of tickets.
- Travel help depends on where you live. Flights and accommodation are tied to the winner living outside NSW. The published details don't say what, if anything, a Sydney-based winner gets beyond the tickets.
- The terms matter. Eligibility rules, age limits, exact travel inclusions and how winners are picked are all set out in the full terms and conditions, and none of the public reporting reproduces them. Read them before you post.
One warning: don't assume the rules match other Xbox FanFest sweepstakes. The official rules Microsoft published for the Los Angeles Games Showcase FanFest sweepstakes covered a different contest. That one was limited to U.S. residents, used a web entry form and offered admission only, with no travel. It tells you nothing reliable about the Australian Wildcards contest.
Section summary: Two packages, each with two tickets, plus flights and a hotel if the winner lives outside NSW. Eligibility and fine print are in the official T&Cs.
How to enter FanFest Wildcards
Here are the steps as MKAU Gaming reported them:
- Record a short clip. It must be 60 seconds or less and share your favourite Xbox memory from the past 25 years. The announcement's examples include local co-op sessions, Halo LAN parties, late-night Game Pass sessions and long-time friends made on Xbox Live.
- Keep it simple. The announcement says no fancy editing or production is needed, just real fan moments. It doesn't publish judging criteria, so nobody outside Xbox ANZ knows whether polish counts.
- Post it on TikTok, tag @XBOXANZ and add #FanFestWildcards.
- Make your account public. Entrants must have their TikTok account set to public.
- Leave the post up. The entry has to stay live and accessible. Deleting it, archiving it or switching your account to private could make it ineligible.
- Check your comments. Winners will be notified by @XBOXANZ in a comment on their eligible TikTok entry. There's no email, so it's worth turning on TikTok notifications once the contest closes.
What counts as a valid entry: a public TikTok clip under 60 seconds, with the tag and hashtag, still visible after 11:59pm AEST on 1 October.
Where entries could go wrong:
- Private account. This is the most likely way to get disqualified by accident.
- Wrong or missing tag. Double-check the spelling of @XBOXANZ and #FanFestWildcards.
- Posting in the wrong time zone. The deadline is in AEST. If you're in Perth or Adelaide, convert it to your local time.
- Clip too long. Trim it to 60 seconds or less.
- Missing the notification. A single comment on a busy post is easy to miss.
Section summary: Make a short public TikTok with the right tag and hashtag, leave it up, post before the AEST deadline and watch your comments.
The event itself
FanFest Sydney is one stop on Microsoft's 25th-anniversary tour. Xbox's official tour announcement said that alongside Los Angeles, throughout the year, we'll be bringing the party to Cologne (Germany), London (UK), Mexico City (Mexico), Seattle (USA), Sydney (Australia), Tokyo (Japan), and Toronto (Canada). Microsoft also said each FanFest event will be unique to the location in which it's held, celebrating the local Xbox community. The August Xbox Wire schedule put Sydney on 17 October, the same day as Mexico City, and said tickets for every stop would be awarded through city-specific sweepstakes.
For Sydney, local coverage gives a few more details. Impulse Gamer reported that the celebration will be heading to Sydney at a location in the CBD on Saturday, 17 October 2026. The same report said fans can expect dedicated XBOX game rooms, developer meet-and-greets, trivia challenges and so much more. No exact venue had been announced in the material available.
It's also a comeback of sorts. EFTM noted that it's been about 10 years since Microsoft last hosted an Xbox FanFest in Sydney. The first round of registrations, EFTM reported, was set to close on Wednesday, 16 September @ 4PM AEST, and tickets to the event will be awarded through a sweepstakes with limited spots available.
Section summary: 17 October, somewhere in the Sydney CBD, with game rooms, developer meet-and-greets and trivia. It's the first Sydney FanFest in about a decade.
Our take: how much is "high demand"?
MKAU Gaming's headline says demand was high, and there's probably something to that. A second-chance contest isn't something you run for an event with empty seats. Still, nobody has published figures on how many tickets there were, how many people entered or how many missed out. So "high demand" is the publisher's description, not a measured number. With only two packages, most people who enter won't win. Treat it as a long shot that costs you a minute of filming.
The format also says something about how Xbox markets itself these days. The first round was a simple registration. The Wildcards round asks fans to make public content on a third-party platform, which doubles as free anniversary marketing for Xbox ANZ. That's a fair trade if you want to go, but know what you're agreeing to. Your clip has to stay public, and it's tied to your identity, so think twice before filming your kid's bedroom or putting your gamertag and home suburb in one clip. And if you only use TikTok as a viewer, you'll need to be comfortable posting publicly to take part at all.
The 25-years theme fits, though. Microsoft is giving out a 25th Anniversary profile badge ahead of the 15 November anniversary and has curated Game Pass collections across console and PC. Asking fans for their own memories, from Halo LAN nights to friends made on Xbox Live, suits a celebration that is mostly about nostalgia.
Bottom line: If you're an eligible Xbox fan in Australia, especially outside NSW where the flights and hotel apply, it costs almost nothing to try. Keep the clip under 60 seconds, the account public and the post live, and get it in before 11:59pm AEST on Thursday, 1 October. Then check your TikTok comments.
