Xbox has widened this week's Free Play Days from three games to seven. The promotion runs from Thursday, October 8 through Sunday, October 11. The catch is that "free" means something different for each game. Some titles need a Game Pass membership, some are open to everyone, and some are timed trials. Here is what each category means.

Screamer and Family Man are available for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members from Thursday, October 8 until Sunday, October 11. ARC Raiders is free for all Xbox members to try over the same dates, with no Game Pass membership required. High On Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Little Nightmares III and Rogue Waters are open to all players as timed trials.

These prices are the ones displayed on Xbox's announcement page. Xbox itself notes that discounts, percentages and availability may vary by title and region, so your own store page is the final word.

Timed trials: only one has a stated limit

Xbox gives an exact allowance for only one of the four trials. Rogue Waters is described as free to play for 2 hours in a timed trial. The announcement text I reviewed gives no duration for High On Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 or Little Nightmares III. Don't assume they are open-ended weekend passes. Check the "Free Trial" label on each store page before you commit your Friday night.

ARC Raiders: the biggest draw

ARC Raiders is the easiest pick for anyone without a subscription. Xbox ties the promotion to the game's first anniversary and to its biggest update since launch, Frozen Trail. Embark's own announcement describes the event as full access to the game, so you can try out the award-winning extraction adventure before you buy.

The ARC Raiders window differs slightly from Xbox's "October 11" wording. Embark says free play runs from October 8 (09.00 UTC) to October 12 (08.00 UTC), 2026, across Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. In practice, the last hours of the free period fall early on Monday in UTC. Xbox's own post gives no exact end time or time zone for the other games.

Coverage of the update says new players can reach the new Pendola Pass map. They need to team up with players who already have it unlocked. That makes squad play the practical way to see the new content during a free weekend.

The ARC Raiders discount lasts longer than the trial. Xbox says the base game, Deluxe Edition and Deluxe upgrade are 50% off from October 8 through October 15.

How to install

Xbox gives two routes:

  • On the web: Open the game's individual page on Xbox.com and follow the install option. This sends you to the Microsoft Store. You need to be signed in to see the option to install with Game Pass.
  • On console (Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S): Open the Xbox Store and go to the Subscriptions tab. Scroll down to the Free Play Days collection.

The button will read either an install option that mentions Game Pass or "Free Trial". Pure Xbox describes the labels as "Install, Included with Game Pass" and "Free Trial", depending on the game.

Keeping your progress

Xbox says that if you buy a game at the discounted price, you keep the Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event. The usual caveat applies: a deal is only a deal if you would have played the game anyway.

A correction to the coverage

Pure Xbox's story, which was updated at 4:10pm on October 8 to reflect the expanded lineup, still says that "all three" games are on sale. That line is left over from the earlier three-game version. Its first draft listed ARC Raiders, Screamer and Family Man. The official announcement shows discounts on all seven titles, so treat the "three" claim as outdated. Pure Xbox also labels ARC Raiders and High On Life 2 without the trial or Game Pass notes that the official post provides, so go by Xbox's categories above.

Bottom line

  • No subscription: Start with ARC Raiders, then try the timed trials.
  • Game Pass members: Screamer and Family Man are included for the weekend.
  • Tight on time: Only Rogue Waters has a published two-hour cap. Check the other three on the store page.
  • Thinking of buying: The advertised discounts are time-limited and regional, so confirm the price on your own store page.

Update: Additional details (October 9, 2026)

According to GAMINGbible’s review of Embark’s Frozen Trail materials, Pendola Pass is reached via Ballistic Gondolas. The update also adds the Bully, Skulker and Hydra threats, while the Frigate now patrols the Rust Belt.

The report says players can build an Outpost to amplify weapons to a fifth tier, alongside new skills, Tethers, a Grapple Hook and two weapons.

Xbox's latest Free Play Days is a mixed bag, and "five free games" glosses over the fine print. ARC Raiders is free for all Xbox members, with no Game Pass membership required, and High On Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Little Nightmares III and Rogue Waters are open to all Xbox players as timed trials. Screamer and Family Man are the only two titles that need a Game Pass tier.
This guide covers what each access group includes, where the sources disagree on the deadline, and how to find the games on your console.

An Xbox gaming setup displays a library of games, with some titles marked as timed or locked. The three access tiers

The headline's "five" is ARC Raiders plus the four timed trials. Here is how the seven games split up, based on Xbox Wire's announcement:
GameWho can playAccess type
ARC RaidersEveryoneFree-play event
High On Life 2EveryoneTimed trial (length not stated)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of ChornobylEveryoneTimed trial (length not stated)
Little Nightmares IIIEveryoneTimed trial (length not stated)
Rogue WatersEveryoneTimed trial, 2 hours
ScreamerGame Pass Ultimate, Premium or EssentialFree Play Days
Family ManGame Pass Ultimate, Premium or EssentialFree Play Days
Xbox Wire says the Game Pass-only pair runs from Thursday, October 8 until Sunday, October 11. The announcement does not give a trial length for the other three trials. Only Rogue Waters has a stated cap: Xbox's listing describes it as a two-hour timed trial. Don't assume the others are unlimited just because they sit under the "For All" heading.

ARC Raiders: the real headliner, with a date mismatch

ARC Raiders is the only title here that gives you the full game. Embark's own announcement says the free period is not a restricted demo and includes the complete game. The offer also lines up with the Frozen Trail update, which Xbox Wire calls the biggest since launch.

The deadline conflict

Xbox Wire says the free access runs from October 8 until October 11. Embark's cross-platform promotion is listed as October 8–12 on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. Several outlets give a precise end time of 08:00 UTC on October 12, which is the early morning of Monday the 12th in UTC.
Neither Xbox nor Embark explains the mismatch. The cautious reading is that Xbox's Free Play Days post uses a weekend framing and Embark's window is slightly longer. If you want to play on Xbox, assume Sunday is the safe cutoff and treat any extra time as a bonus. The GAMINGbible piece makes the same point and advises starting early.

What Frozen Trail adds

Embark's announcement describes a new region, Pendola Pass, reached via the Ballistic Gondolas. It lists three new threats: the Bully, the Skulker and the Hydra. The Frigate now patrols the Rust Belt. Players can also build an Outpost to amplify weapons to a fifth tier, and they get new skills, Tethers, a Grapple Hook and two new weapons.
Free players should expect some limits on progression. A report from Rolling Out says not every map is available right away, with Buried City opening after six matches and Riven Tides after 20. It also says progress carries over if you buy the game. That is third-party reporting, not Xbox's own wording, so treat the details as secondary.

Fine print on "free"

Embark's page lists several requirements:
  • An internet connection.
  • An Embark ID account and a third-party platform account.
  • Agreement to Embark's terms.
  • Age 13 or older.
  • A PS5-in-Germany exception that carries a €0.25 fee.
So "free" means no purchase, not no account.

The four timed trials

  • High On Life 2 (Squanch Games) is a bounty-hunting shooter with talking alien guns, and Xbox's listing carries a Free Trial label.
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl (GSC Game World) is set in the Chornobyl Anomalous Zone. Xbox says Update 2.0 is aimed at performance and a significant change to the game's look and feel (paraphrased from the Xbox Wire listing). That matters if launch-day performance put you off.
  • Little Nightmares III (Bandai Namco) is a horror puzzle adventure set in the Spiral. GAMINGbible's writer says it lacks the magic of earlier entries. That is one reviewer's opinion, and a trial is a cheap way to form your own.
  • Rogue Waters (Tripwire Interactive) is a turn-based pirate roguelite. You play Captain Cutter and manage a crew across procedurally generated encounters.
Trials are a good fit for slow-burn or divisive games. Two hours is enough to judge the combat loop of a roguelite, but a sprawling open-world game like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 may need longer than a trial allows.

Game Pass-only extras

Screamer is an arcade racer with fighting mechanics and anime-style visuals, per Xbox's description. Family Man is a dark, story-driven RPG from No More Robots about moral choices and earning money for your family. Both require an eligible Game Pass tier. Xbox's list includes Essential, so the entry bar is lower than "Ultimate only".

How to get the games

  1. Open each game's details page on Xbox.com. It links to the Microsoft Store.
  2. Sign in on the Store page. Xbox notes that you must be signed in to see the install option tied to your Game Pass membership.
  3. On Xbox One or Series X|S, open the Xbox Store, go to the Subscriptions tab, and scroll to the Free Play Days collection.
If you buy a game afterward, Xbox says you keep the Gamerscore and achievements you earned during the event.

Discounts on offer

Xbox Wire's post lists limited-time discounts for anyone who wants to keep playing. Prices and availability may vary by title and region, according to Xbox.
  • ARC Raiders: 50% off the base game, Deluxe Edition and Deluxe upgrade from October 8 through October 15.
  • Screamer: 60% off.
  • Family Man: 85% off.
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: 30% off.
  • Rogue Waters: 75% off.

Bottom line

This is a strong Free Play Days lineup, but only ARC Raiders is a full-game giveaway. The practical advice is to check the date, since Sunday is the safe cutoff on Xbox. Then pick the trials you actually want to sample, because a two-hour clock (for Rogue Waters, at least) disappears fast. Finally, check your Game Pass tier before chasing Screamer or Family Man.
