After two decades of Gamerscore, Xbox finally has a trophy for finishing the whole achievement list. Microsoft's new Mythic Achievements went into testing with Xbox Insiders on September 29, 2026. The Verge and Gematsu both covered the launch, and The Verge compared the feature to PlayStation's Platinum trophies. It's an easy comparison to make, but Microsoft built it with its own rules, and those rules are what achievement hunters will care about.

What Microsoft actually announced

Microsoft posted the announcement on Xbox Wire. It's signed by Alex Charters, Senior Product Manager, and Eden Marie, Principal Software Engineering Lead. The core rule is simple: you earn a Mythic Achievement when you complete all original achievements for a game. Achievements added later through DLC or updates aren't required, and once you've earned Mythic status, it's yours to keep.

Gematsu's write-up adds a detail worth noting: Mythic Achievements do not add new challenges or Gamerscore; they provide an additional way for players to showcase which games they have completed. So there's no extra grind and no score bonus. It's a marker that says you finished the game properly.

The key facts:

  • Who has it now: Xbox Insiders only, as an early test. Microsoft hasn't given a date for everyone else.
  • What qualifies: every original achievement in a game.
  • What doesn't count: achievements added later through DLC or title updates.
  • Gamerscore: Mythic status adds none.
  • Permanence: once you earn Mythic status, you keep it.

Your old completions count

Mythic status also applies to games you've already finished. According to Xbox, Mythic Achievements have already been added to eligible games you completed in the past, including XBOX 360 titles. So, the next time you visit your profile, you may discover that some of your favorite games have already reached Mythic status.

If you finished Mass Effect in 2008, you don't need to replay it. The catch is the word "eligible." Microsoft hasn't published a list of supported games, and it doesn't say that every older title qualifies. It also doesn't explain how the system handles odd cases, such as games whose original achievement lists were later changed. Don't assume your whole backlog will convert until you've checked your profile.

The new Gaming tab and progress tools

Mythic Achievements come with an update to the profile. Per Microsoft, your profile now includes a new Gaming tab, where you can see your achievements, track your next Gamerscore milestone badge, and revisit the games you've completed. Mythic Achievements stand out in your achievement history with a heroic frame, making it easy to see how many you've already earned. You can also look at a friend's Gaming tab to see what they've accomplished and discover which games they've taken to Mythic.

For games you're still working on, each achievement list now has a progress bar at the top showing how close you are to Mythic status. There's also an option to show only the original achievements you still need. Achievements added later are tagged "add-on," so you can tell what counts. Microsoft says you'll see similar progress information across XBOX, including in Guide and Achievement details, making it easier to pick up where you left off.

Microsoft doesn't say which devices, apps or interface versions get each of these elements during the test. Insiders shouldn't expect every screen on every platform to look the same yet.

Section summary: The Gaming tab shows your Mythic count. The progress bar and "add-on" labels show what's left to do. Achievements from DLC and title updates are clearly marked and don't count toward Mythic.

How to check your status as an Insider

Microsoft only described these features in general terms, so this is a practical outline rather than exact menu steps:

  • Join Xbox Insiders if you haven't. Xbox Wire points newcomers to the Xbox Insider Hub for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC. On PC, DayOne notes that you can download the Xbox Insider app via the Microsoft Store on your Windows 11-based PC. Joining doesn't guarantee instant access. Microsoft doesn't say whether every Insider gets the feature at once.
  • Open your profile and find the new Gaming tab. Look for games already marked Mythic with the new frame, including older completions.
  • Open the achievement list for a game you're working on. Check the progress bar and turn on the option to show only the original achievements you still need.
  • Ignore anything tagged "add-on." Those achievements don't count toward Mythic.
  • If something looks wrong, such as a finished game with no Mythic status, report it. Xbox sends Insiders to its feedback channels and points out that if you're an XBOX Insider looking for support, please join our community on the XBOX Insider subreddit. Official XBOX staff, moderators, and fellow XBOX Insiders are there to help.

The leak before the launch

The feature didn't arrive as a surprise. The Verge reports that Mythic Achievements leaked in the Xbox PC app the week before, unlock sound included. It also says the test began only weeks after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said a platinum-trophy equivalent was coming later this year.

Other outlets covered the leak in more detail. LEVEL UP reports that Sharma first teased the concept in mid-August, confirming that her team was building a project scheduled for late-year release. It also says a TrueAchievements report followed a discovery by user Klobrille, who extracted the official icon and unlock sound from the Xbox application.

Insider Gaming, citing TrueAchievements, described the leaked visuals: once you earned a Mythic, the game art in the Gaming Tab will be decorated with a "green star, laurel, and a green border." That came before launch. Microsoft's own announcement only mentions a "heroic frame," so treat the green laurel as reported, not confirmed. Insider Gaming's version of the rules, however, matches what Microsoft shipped: DLC and title-update achievements don't count, and the Mythic Achievement does not contribute any Gamerscore.

This also isn't the first achievements update of 2026. In April, AlternativeTo reported that Microsoft had started rolling out achievement changes to some Insiders. These included a visual refresh for achievement notifications, with classic and rare unlocks now getting updated icons, new animations, and a cleaner presentation. Mythic Achievements are the biggest step in that longer overhaul so far.

Is it really "just like" Platinum trophies?

Roughly, yes. Both are a single marker for finishing a game's achievement set. LEVEL UP describes the history this way: while Microsoft pioneered and popularized achievement systems during the Xbox 360 era, Sony took it to the next level by introducing the Platinum trophy, a reward awarded automatically upon earning all standard trophies in a base game.

The differences are in the details:

AspectXbox Mythic Achievement (per Microsoft)
RequirementAll original achievements for a game
DLC/update achievementsNot required, labeled "add-on"
Gamerscore valueNone
RetroactiveYes, for eligible past completions, including some Xbox 360 games
RevocableMicrosoft says the status "is yours to keep"
AvailabilityXbox Insider early test, no public date

The retroactive part matters most. Xbox's achievement history goes back to the Xbox 360, and Microsoft is using it instead of starting from zero. Long-time players could open their profile and find a pile of Mythic badges already waiting.

The skeptical view

Not everyone is celebrating. Kotaku pointed out that the rollout came the very same week that it laid off even more staff across its studios as part of a larger "reset" that started in July. The writer said it's hard to shake the feeling that Xbox is trying to shake some shiny keys in front of people.

That's an opinion, not proof of motive, and it doesn't change how the feature works. Still, it's fair to point out that a profile badge costs Microsoft far less than a new first-party game.

There's also the question of the rules themselves. Excluding DLC is friendlier to players and avoids the old problem of a "100%" completion disappearing when an expansion lands. Purists might argue the opposite: a Mythic badge on a game with three unfinished expansions arguably says less about "completion" than it sounds. The "add-on" labels at least make that choice visible.

What happens next

For now, Mythic Achievements are an Insider test. There's no public release date and no list of eligible games. Microsoft's announcement closes with its usual call for Insider feedback. Based on how Xbox Insider features usually work, expect some changes to visuals and edge cases before a wider release, though Microsoft hasn't said what those changes will be.

If you're an Insider, open your Gaming tab and see which old games already have Mythic status. If you're not, the Xbox Insider Hub is how you sign up.

Update: Additional details (September 30, 2026)

Pure Xbox reports that Asha Sharma’s September 29 E-Day Mythic clip showed the new notification with a distinct logo and unlock sound.

Separately, The Coalition’s September 9 achievement list for Gears of War: E-Day contains 55 achievements, including the zero-Gamerscore “The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day” for earning every other in-game achievement. Its requirements reportedly include an Insane campaign completion, 25,000 Versus kills, 50,000 Horde Siege kills, and maxing all four Horde Siege classes.

Update: Retroactive Mythic unlocks reportedly skip the notification animation (September 30, 2026)

Retroactively awarded Mythic Achievements reportedly do not trigger the new unlock animation, according to TweakTown’s September 30 coverage. The outlet says launching a game you previously completed will not replay the Mythic achievement pop-up. It reports that these notifications—called “toasts”—appear only when a player newly earns the Mythic Achievement, rather than when an older completion receives the status retroactively.

That distinction adds a qualification to the notification details covered in the earlier update: according to TweakTown, the new animation is not something returning completionists should expect to see simply by reopening a finished title. For players checking their older games, the practical takeaway is to look for the Mythic marker in their profile instead of treating the absence of an on-screen celebration as evidence that recognition failed. The report describes a difference in how the award is presented, not a loss of the retroactively granted status or a requirement to complete the game again.

Update: Mythic test reportedly limited to two Insider rings (September 30, 2026)

Mythic Achievements appear to be limited to the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead Insider rings, according to GodisaGeek’s September 30 report. That adds a narrower availability detail to the initial announcement: being enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program alone should not be taken as confirmation that an account has access to the test.

GodisaGeek reports that it remains unclear when additional rings will receive the feature. Its wording describes an apparent rollout restriction rather than an explicitly confirmed Microsoft eligibility policy, so the two-ring limitation should be treated as reported, not definitive. The report does not establish a separate access schedule for Windows PC users.

For players who have joined the program but cannot see the new features, this provides a possible explanation other than a problem with their achievement history. The practical distinction is between joining the Insider Program and receiving this particular preview. The report offers no timetable for access beyond those two rings.

Update: Public Mythic rollout reportedly expected in coming weeks (October 3, 2026)

Mythic Achievements are expected to reach the public “in the coming weeks,” according to Pure Xbox’s October 3 report. That adds a reported release window beyond the Insider preview, although the outlet gives no exact launch date and does not attribute the timing to a new Microsoft announcement. This qualifies the earlier availability picture rather than establishing a confirmed release schedule.

For players outside the preview, the practical implication is that wider access may be approaching, according to Pure Xbox. Its report does not specify whether console and Windows PC availability will arrive together, or whether the public rollout will happen in stages. The reported window therefore should not be treated as a guarantee that every Xbox account or interface will receive Mythic features simultaneously.

Pure Xbox also suggests a preliminary way to estimate potential awards: open your Xbox profile’s Gaming tab and filter achievements for “Completed” titles. The outlet cautions that eligibility exceptions remain unresolved, so that list is an estimate—not confirmation of how many Mythic badges an account will receive.

Update: Mythic totals may rise or fall as Xbox fixes preview calculations (October 5, 2026)

Xbox Insiders’ displayed Mythic Achievement totals may change as Microsoft corrects its calculations, according to Windows Report’s October 5 coverage. The outlet cites a post by Xbox engineering lead Eden Marie warning that fixes during testing could alter players’ unlock counts. That adds an important qualification to the earlier permanence claim: the preview’s displayed total should not yet be treated as a settled count.

Windows Report, citing TrueAchievements, also reports that some games are not returning Mythic status correctly. TrueAchievements reportedly saw its own total drop during testing, suggesting the issue can affect recognition already visible on a profile—not just games that have yet to receive a badge.

For players checking their completed games, a missing marker or lower total therefore does not, by itself, establish that an underlying achievement has been lost. The reported warning concerns how Mythic completions are calculated during the preview. Windows Report provides no timetable for correcting the affected games or stabilizing totals, so Insiders should treat their current Mythic count as provisional rather than a definitive measure of eligible completions.
