OK. You can reformat the C: drive and reinstall Windows on the Windows partitionn. On your other partition(s) the data will be intact still. But programmes on those partitions that were installed will need a fresh installation.

You can reformat a partition without affecting another one. But, the installation of software is a different matter. The installation details are held in the registry, by Windows. And a moved file won't match that - or if Windows was purged, then the registry entries won't exist.

Win 7 will make a disc image and will also backup sets of files. At first it seemed to take a lot of space, and also seemed like it was not saving the files incrementally, so that each file backup was as large as the original one. Mysteriously that seems to have settled down, now.

Which is the point. You need to add an item to the context menu and go through all those hoops to do something very basic, which you are allowed to do. It's security by tedium.

Permissions I do find the permissions/security a bit cumbersome. It's plenty secure, but not always easy to make Win7 do what it's needed to. Some programmes are probably at fault, e.g. by needing admin to run.
