auto negotiation
About this tag
Auto negotiation is a network feature that allows Ethernet devices to automatically select the best speed and duplex mode for a connection. On Windows, users may encounter issues where auto negotiation causes periodic PPPoE disconnections or prevents manual speed configuration. Some network cards lack speed and duplex options beyond auto negotiation, making it difficult to force a specific speed like 1Gbps or 100Mbps. Troubleshooting slow internet on Windows 7 often involves testing different auto negotiation settings, including disabling it to set fixed speeds such as 1000 full duplex or 100 full/half duplex. Adjusting related settings like flow control and energy star can also help resolve connection stability and performance problems.
