The canary channel split refers to a February 2026 Windows Insider Program change that gave Canary-channel testers a choice between two build paths. One path continues with the existing 28000-series preview focused on 26H1 feature exploration. The other is an optional platform-development path that moves devices to a new 29500-series of flights, starting with Build 29531.1000. This split allows Insiders to decide whether to stay on the feature preview track or opt into deeper platform work.
