common dialogs
About this tag
Common dialogs in Windows, such as the Open, Save As, and Print dialog boxes, are standard system interfaces used by many applications. Users may encounter issues like hyperlinks replacing static text in dialog entries, missing shortcuts like the Desktop icon in the navigation pane, or the need to customize the Places bar locations. These problems can affect workflow, especially in enterprise environments with terminal servers or Citrix. Troubleshooting often involves registry edits, Group Policy settings, or restoring default shell folder locations. Understanding how common dialogs behave across different Windows versions, including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, is key to resolving these issues.
I have an application that calls Windows API functions to display the Common
Dialog boxes (e.g. Print Dialog, File Save As..., etc.). The Common Dialog boxes
display correctly on my own network, but I have a client who is running my
application on a Windows Server 2008 R2 application server...
Somehow I managed to remove the "Desktop" item on the shortcut pane in Explorer - which also affects Common Dialog boxes. It is incredibly annoying as I use this shortcut all the time. How do I get it back? I've looked all over but no where has answers! Thanks!

In Windows XP I used to customize Places bar locations in a Common Dialog (Open/Save As) boxes to my choice of folders.
