About this tag
The tag 'default associations' on WindowsForum.com covers issues related to file type and protocol associations in Windows, particularly after system updates. A common problem discussed is shortcuts becoming generic and icons not displaying correctly, often requiring restoration of default associations for file types like .ico. Users have reported that standard troubleshooting steps such as icon cache rebuilds, browser cache cleanup, and IE resets may not resolve the issue. In some cases, attempting a system Refresh fails with an error message, leaving no changes made. These discussions highlight challenges with maintaining or restoring default associations after Windows updates, especially in builds like 9879 and during upgrades from Windows 8 to 8.1.
