defect sector
About this tag
A defect sector, also known as a bad sector, is a damaged area on a hard disk that cannot reliably store data. In Windows 7, users may encounter defect sectors when checking disk surface health, often indicated by red squares in diagnostic tools. When spare sectors are exhausted, the system may still attempt to write data to these areas, risking file corruption. One approach discussed is copying a dummy file to the defect sector to block further writes, though identifying the exact sector number is challenging. This tag covers troubleshooting and workarounds for managing defect sectors on older hard drives without immediate replacement.
On one of my (older) computers there is a defect sector on the hard disk.
Checking the surface of the hard disk shows a red square for it.
It seems to me that all the "usual" reserve sectors are already in use.
Every thing else works on this computer. No unusual noise comes from the hard disk...
