disk signature

About this tag
A disk signature is a unique identifier assigned to a disk by Windows during initialization. Duplicate disk signatures can cause issues such as Windows refusing to mount a drive or backup restoration failures. In Windows, you can change a disk signature using the DiskPart utility with the command 'uniqueid disk id=[new signature]' after selecting the correct disk. Alternatively, Windows may automatically assign a new signature when you bring the disk online in Disk Management. Disk signature conflicts often arise when cloning or recovering a system drive to a new disk, or when using Windows To Go on different PCs, which can also lead to application deactivation due to hardware changes.
