downscaling

As the pixel dimensions of the image that is being rendered by a gpu can be different from the ones from a monitor, I wonder if it is possible to set higher values than allowed by the monitor. What I want to achieve is that my gpu renders images at e.g. full hd [1920x1080] even if the monitor's...
