About this tag
Changing a drive letter in Windows can break programs that rely on the original letter to find their files. When you assign a new letter, installed software may fail to launch or open files correctly because their shortcuts, registry entries, and file associations still point to the old path. Common symptoms include broken "Open with" dialogs and programs that cannot locate their components. To fix this, you can either change the drive letter back to its original value, reinstall the affected programs, or manually update registry entries and shortcuts to reflect the new letter. Understanding how Windows assigns and manages drive letters helps prevent these issues when swapping or adding drives.
