dummy files
About this tag
Discussions about dummy files on WindowsForum.com focus on using them to block defective hard disk sectors. Users explore methods to copy a dummy file onto a bad sector to prevent Windows from writing important data there, effectively marking the sector as unusable. Topics include identifying the exact sector number, write-protecting the file, and considerations for older hard drives with limited reserve sectors. The tag covers practical troubleshooting for hard disk defects without immediate replacement, relevant to Windows 7 and similar systems.
On one of my (older) computers there is a defect sector on the hard disk.
Checking the surface of the hard disk shows a red square for it.
It seems to me that all the "usual" reserve sectors are already in use.
Every thing else works on this computer. No unusual noise comes from the hard disk...
