function level 2003

About this tag
The tag 'function level 2003' refers to the Active Directory domain and forest functional level set to Windows Server 2003. This setting determines which advanced features are available and which operating systems can serve as domain controllers. Discussions under this tag often involve planning to raise the functional level to a newer version, such as 2008 or higher, while ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure. A common concern is whether legacy servers, like Windows Server 2003 file servers, will continue to function after the functional level is raised. The tag covers scenarios where domain controllers are running newer OS versions (e.g., Windows Server 2012 R2) but the functional level remains at 2003, and users seek guidance on safe upgrade paths without disrupting network services.

Raising domain/forest function level to 2008 or higher with 2003 file servers running on the network

hi, I hope i get the terms right. I have 2012 r2 domain controllers running at a 2003 level. Can i raise the domain/function level from 2003 to 2008 or higher without affecting the 2003 file servers running on the network? Thanks
