Raising domain/forest function level to 2008 or higher with 2003 file servers running on the network

hi, I hope i get the terms right. I have 2012 r2 domain controllers running at a 2003 level. Can i raise the domain/function level from 2003 to 2008 or higher without affecting the 2003 file servers running on the network? Thanks
