hiberfil.sys
About this tag
The hiberfil.sys file is a system file used by Windows to store the contents of RAM when the computer enters hibernation. Users on WindowsForum.com discuss managing this file to free up disk space, especially on devices with limited storage like tablets or SSDs. Common questions include whether it is safe to delete hiberfil.sys, how to disable hibernation to remove it, and why the file may reappear after reboot. Some users report that Windows updates can increase the file size unexpectedly. The file can be managed via the powercfg command, but caution is advised as it is tied to system features like fast startup.
I have a Dell Venue 8 pro running desperately low on memory. I ran SequoiaView on it to see what was taking up so much space and it says hiberfil.sys is taking up 1.2 GB. I'm wondering if it's OK to uninstall it? I don't even have Hibernate on my tablet but I've read online that hiberfil.sys is...

- hiberfil.sys is still updated (last modified date=today)
How else can I check if...

Hi All,
The files pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys are 8GB and 6GB accordingly.
Are they important? Can I delete them or at least reduce them?
Thanks

I'm running Win7 Pro x64. I have an SSD and 10GB RAM. I don't like having hiberfil.sys burn so much space and never use hibernation.
Disabling all hibernation features via Control Panel doesn't get rid of the file, or allow me to delete it.
Running "powercfg -h off" from an elevated prompt...

Spybot. It seemed to go well so I resumed my computing.
I restarted the computer and...
