hot docking
About this tag
Hot docking refers to connecting or disconnecting a laptop from a docking station while the system is running, without shutting down. On WindowsForum.com, users discuss practical concerns around hot docking, such as whether USB hard drives attached to a dock require safe removal before undocking, and troubleshooting system freezes that occur when hot docking. Common themes include device management settings like Quick Removal, data integrity risks, and hardware compatibility issues with docks from manufacturers like Lenovo. These discussions highlight the need for careful handling of peripherals and understanding of Windows behavior during hot docking operations.
Seems to be several opinions on this as I Google, so thought to ask you all here as well for your thoughts.
Lenovo P51S with Ultradock. Two USB hard drives attached to the dock. Both set for "Quick Removal" in Device Manager.

Everything seems to be working correctly, as far as I can tell. I can undock the machine while running, but as soon as I put it back in the dock, windows freezes.
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks!
