major release

About this tag
The major release tag on WindowsForum.com covers discussions about Microsoft Windows version numbering and naming conventions. Users debate whether Windows 7 is truly the seventh version, noting that its internal version number is 6.1, indicating it is based on Windows Vista (6.0). Topics include how Microsoft uses marketing names like "7" or "XP" rather than strict version numbers, and whether this practice is misleading. The tag also touches on user perceptions of major releases, the evolution of Windows codebases, and speculation about future versions like Windows 8. These conversations reflect ongoing interest in understanding the technical and marketing aspects of Windows major releases.
