memory overclock instability

About this tag
Memory overclock instability often appears as intermittent system hangs, black screens, or TDR resets without a full crash. In one reported case, enabling XMP on DDR5 RAM to reach its rated 6000 MHz speed triggered error code 117 during light gaming, while standard memory tests and SFC scans passed. Disabling XMP and returning to default 4200 MHz resolved the issue. This pattern suggests that even validated XMP profiles can cause instability on certain CPU or motherboard combinations, particularly with newer DDR5 kits. Troubleshooting memory overclock instability typically involves reverting to stock speeds, testing with MemTest86, and adjusting voltage or timings if needed.
