non-system disk
About this tag
The non-system disk error is a common boot failure message indicating that the computer cannot find a valid operating system on the startup drive. On WindowsForum.com, users report this error after adding a new hard drive, replacing a disk, or when dual-booting systems like Windows 7 and macOS. The error often stems from BIOS boot order misconfiguration, missing or corrupted boot files, or the system reserved partition being placed on the wrong disk. Troubleshooting steps discussed include checking BIOS settings to ensure the correct boot drive is selected, verifying disk connections, and repairing boot files using Windows recovery tools or a bootable USB. In some cases, the error occurs when a non-system disk is accidentally set as the primary boot device.

What happened was a Windows 7 OS recovery was attempted and failed. I couldn't boot the computer.
