About this tag
NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) is a Windows subsystem that allows 16-bit MS-DOS applications to run on 32-bit versions of Windows. On WindowsForum.com, users frequently report encountering the error 'The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction' when trying to run older programs or encountering malware. Common scenarios include launching Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8, running legacy software like CABWeb, or seeing persistent pop-ups on startup. Some users also notice NTVDM.exe consuming high CPU usage in Task Manager, which can indicate a problematic 16-bit process or infection. Troubleshooting steps discussed include closing the application, scanning for malware, and disabling NTVDM if not needed.

On starting my computer this morning I have noticed the CPU cooling fans running a little harder than I'm used to hearing when just using Firefox.
On looking at the task manager I have noticed that rather than sitting at the normal 0% CPU usage when idle a process labelled NTVDM.exe is...
