Outpainting is an AI-driven image editing technique that extends or expands the background of an image beyond its original boundaries. In the context of Google Workspace, outpainting is integrated into Google Slides and Google Vids through a feature called Background expansion, which uses Gemini AI to intelligently generate new background areas based on text prompts. This allows users to create wider or more contextually relevant visuals without manual editing. The feature is part of a broader update that also includes Replace background, and it began rolling out to Rapid Release domains on July 28, 2025, with Scheduled Release domains following on August 14, 2025. Outpainting is designed to help non-designers produce cleaner, more professional-looking images directly within Google's productivity tools.
