random access
About this tag
The tag 'random access' on WindowsForum.com covers discussions about hard disk and SSD performance, specifically comparing sequential and random read/write speeds. Users report dramatic differences between these transfer rates, often using benchmarking tools like CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD Benchmark. Topics include optimizing cluster and sector sizes for NTFS-formatted drives to improve random access speed, troubleshooting slow boot times and high disk activity linked to poor random read performance, and understanding the impact of file system configuration on drive behavior. The content focuses on storage hardware, benchmarking, and Windows performance tuning.
I have connected my computer through USB 3.0 cable with an external (backup) hard disk (Hitachi HDS724040ALE640, SATA III, 7200rpm, 4TB, NTFS formatted, empty).
The USB controller in external case box and the
USB port on mainboard are USB 3.0 compatible.
When I benchmark now the transfer rate...

Whats the recommended cluster and sector size for 4TB or 6TB hard disk (formatted with NTFS)?
It should be optimized for random access speed.
Whats the difference between cluster and sector size at all?
And which one has more impact on the random access speed?

A new SSD benchmarking tool is available. AS SSD Benchmark is a small, free application avalable to download here:

Hi, I've been having nightmare with PC boot times ( up to 1 hour long) and extremely limited usage after boot, due to 100% disk activity.
I have tried everything possible with windows itself, so today tried to test HDD with HDDtune Pro.
Question,
#1 - Are these low read speeds?
#2 - If so...
