red x icon
About this tag
The red x icon on Windows 7 often appears on network or audio icons in the system tray, indicating a problem such as no connection, missing drivers, or hardware issues. Common scenarios include a red X on the network icon despite being connected to the internet, or on the speaker icon with errors like 'No Audio Output Device Is Installed' or 'no speakers or headphones are plugged in.' Troubleshooting steps discussed include reinstalling drivers, checking device manager for missing audio or network controllers, and verifying BIOS settings. The red x icon can also appear on the close button of Internet Explorer 8, causing slow exit behavior.
