Samba 4.25 is the first stable release in the 4.25 series, and the tagged coverage centers on its experimental SMB3 Persistent Handles support. That feature lets Windows and other SMB3 clients reconnect after a Linux file-server restart or outage while keeping valid handles to open files, but it works only on SMB-exclusive shares and adds measurable latency to opens, updates, leases, and closes. It targets continuous-availability workloads such as VM storage and clustered databases rather than ordinary file servers. The same release also makes AES the default Kerberos encryption for many Samba AD domain configurations, a change relevant to Windows domain administrators.
