sector identification
About this tag
This tag covers discussions about identifying defective sectors on hard disks, particularly in older computers running Windows 7. Users seek methods to locate bad sectors, such as using surface scan tools that display red squares for damaged areas. The goal is often to block these sectors by copying dummy files onto them to prevent the operating system from writing important data there. Topics include sector identification techniques, reserve sector exhaustion, and workarounds to extend disk usability without replacement. The tag is relevant for troubleshooting hard disk errors and managing data integrity on aging drives.
On one of my (older) computers there is a defect sector on the hard disk.
Checking the surface of the hard disk shows a red square for it.
It seems to me that all the "usual" reserve sectors are already in use.
Every thing else works on this computer. No unusual noise comes from the hard disk...
