software raid
About this tag
Software RAID uses the operating system to manage disk arrays instead of a dedicated hardware controller. On Windows, this is commonly implemented through Storage Spaces or dynamic disks, offering RAID 0, 1, 5, and other configurations for performance or redundancy. Discussions on WindowsForum cover setting up software RAID for home servers and media centers, troubleshooting issues like BSODs or failed drives, and comparing software versus hardware RAID. While most content focuses on Windows, some threads also reference Linux software RAID, including performance improvements via AVX-512 and a security vulnerability (CVE-2024-35808) affecting the md/dm-raid driver. Whether you are building a DIY NAS or recovering a degraded array, software RAID provides a flexible, cost-effective storage solution.
Google engineer Eric Biggers has posted a revised AVX-512 implementation of Linux’s xor_gen() parity routine for review on the kernel mailing list, with Phoronix reporting on June 14, 2026, that the new version now shows performance gains of up to 43 percent in RAID-related workloads. The number...
A high-risk flaw in the Linux kernel’s software RAID code, tracked as CVE-2024-35808, has been quietly fixed upstream and pushed into vendor updates: the md/dm-raid driver called md_reap_sync_thread from raid_message without the necessary synchronization, creating a window where the kernel’s...
If you’re looking to boost your drive speeds while adding an extra layer of data redundancy on your Windows PC, software RAID using Windows’ built-in Storage Spaces might just be the solution. In this article, we explore the ins and outs of software RAID, guide you through a step-by-step setup...
Thanks to my discovery of this forum my video server is well on its way to being set-up (Thanks to Neemobeer). My next question has to do with setting up a RAID 5 array. As I understand RAID it provides some level of data redundancy and a higher read speed than a plain old JBOD (spanning)...

thank's in advance
i have googled the web but could not come up with any answers. I have a windows softwareraid "5" (yes plz hate me for this) with 3x3TB disks, one disk recensently failed. I have just replaced the bad disk with a new one. But i have still no way to add the new disk to the "old" raid, and the bad...

I have a computer I built years ago that is used as a media center. Its attached to my TV and runs XBMC. I RDP into another session and run media manager apps and some file servers.
Its prone to crashing. I disabled hardware raid in favor of using window's software raid, and that has reduced...

Dear all,

I don't know why i am not able to transfer file to portable harddrive/usb flash drive,
It just show calculating for long long time, sometime even handed
However, i tried to clone a harddisk image...
I setup a redundancy using windows 7 for the time being until I can afford a decent RAID card. My question is whether or not I will have near double read speed by using it. I know that since only some software RAID has this ability, I bet I don't... but I have no idea how to tell.
For...
Sorry for the long post :(
I have 7 hard disks, all SATA
3 - are a hardware based raid 5 array
4 - are a raid-5 dynamic volume.
All disks are intact no damage.
Dynamic volume was used 2 hours ago, no issue
I wanted to load windows 7 on it to see how it would perform on this machine.
So...

Hello,
I want to setup a Raid 1 mirror from one drive to another using Windows software raid. I know in XP you could not do this on the boot partition (C drive). Is it possible to do this in Windows 7?
Thanks
