thrashing

About this tag
Thrashing refers to excessive hard drive activity that can occur even when a system is idle or running normal programs. In Windows 7, users may hear the hard drive constantly clicking or seeking, indicating thrashing. Common causes include insufficient RAM, memory leaks, or background processes that force the system to rely heavily on virtual memory. Troubleshooting steps often involve checking resource usage in Task Manager, disabling unnecessary startup programs, and ensuring adequate physical memory is available to reduce reliance on the page file.
