The WIDTM error occurs when the Windows 7 system file 'WIDTM' becomes compressed, typically after a user accidentally compresses the C: drive. This results in a blank screen with the message 'WIDTM is compressed. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.' Users may be unable to access Safe Mode but can still enter BIOS and boot drivers. Attempts to repair the drive or restore to a previous point may temporarily work but the error often returns.
