Windows Vista Account Privs are messed up please help

i have just got my laptop that has windows vista home basic, i installed a game no problem but when i go to load the game it needs to install some protection software in which i get a message saying i need admin privs. which i do have as im the only user and an admin, i also get this when starting photoshop CS2 it also says i need admin privs how can i sort this out
