Windows 7 adminstration control

Hello, I've been having problems with my Trend Micro Titanium scans. I've just been connected remotely with a technician from Trend who has found the problem, but cannot fis it. It seems a update from Microsoft has knocked out any adminstration control that I had or didn't have. When he tried to do a sfc/scannow there is no response. He said thats because of the admin problem, also there is a White Screen in the Menu bar, these he tells me are connected. And windows tells me that I have a slow performance problem as well. There is NO VIRUS in my notebook, I have 4gb of memory of which about 1gb is been used. A 620gb of hard drive of which only 65gb is used. My notebook is a HP G42-474 running Windows7 Pro using Internet Explorer 9.

Any ideas where I can get a patch to fix this or any ideas on how to fix my problems.
Thanking anyone in advance
Greg Nantong China.
p.s the Trend Tech said that he couldn't do what's required to fix Trend's problem with the scanning the admin problem is fixed

Did this just start and ran fine for a period of time prior to the problem showing up?

Did the tech suggest uninstalling then reinstalling their software? Or uninstalling (use cleaning tool) and moving to Microsoft's Security Essentials?

The tech should have known if there were any updates that might be relevant.

Performance problems might be caused by part of Trend Micro having a problem with your current setup. Perhaps the SP1 or IE9 update changed some files it could not keep up with.

Does the program have parts you can turn off to test? Maybe something is interfering with a Windows utility.

But to find what might be causing a performance problem, you will have to do the work. See if you can find anything in Task Manger Performance tab that might indicate high CPU usage. Perhaps also use the resource monitor or preformance monitor to see if anything looks strange.

Hi

I would do what Saltgrass suggested and uninstall the software, and then reinstall it again and see if you can get back where you were.

It's possible that if the problems were caused by and update from Microsoft that installing it after the update is already there will fix it.

Once it's uninstalled run CCleaner, and clean the junk and left over registry entries.
It wouldn't hurt to run Malwarbytes too just to be sure.

If possible reinstall in a different location then the original one, even if you just rename the folder NewTMTinstall, or something like that.

That will help keep Windows from seeing it as the same software and not pick up errors from the original installation.

Make sure that MSE is turned off while you do the install.

I don't know if this will fix it but it's worth a shot.

Mike

Ps, I tried to find the link to the Microsoft Cleaning Tool but couldn't maybe someone else has it.
I know I found it not long ago when I had to remove Norton Ghost.

Hi and thank u for your reply. The tech tried to stop the software, but it tells him that he doesn't have permission to do that. I think he tried to uninstall and was told the same thing which is why he has asked me to contact help here and call Microsoft themselves. I have tried to contact them via phone( having connection hassles with that though-I'm in China) The program has been running well for two months, i had a hassles with a toolbar named zooom which was stopping me downloading or saving anything.Trend couldn't find nor fix it, so a tech at the shop here in China that I purchased this notebook from ran a Chinese anti-virus program called 360, it fixed the problem. The hassle with Trend started three days later after a update from both Windows and Trend the same day and I updated to IE 9 as well. This has now gone on for some ten days. I have noticed a high CPU usage, but since I'm a "gumbie" with all things tech with regard to a computer I'm not that confident with tweaking anything or what the high usages mean. The performance of the Physical Memory Usage History is usually around 890mb but it has gone as high as 2gb with only a couple of websites opened. At the moment I have three sites opened with one streaming a live football game from Australia and the usage is running at CPU 13% Physical Memory 34% and memory at 1.08gb.

Hi and thanks for your reply. The tech ran the Malwarbytes, however nothing found. He said that the notebook is clean. It's a problem with the permission control which is preventing him repairing the Trend software. He cannot uninstall Trend, it won't allow him??I;m not that good with things Tech on a computer, so whats a MSE?

There is a community forum on the Trend Micro site. At least in this country. Perhaps you could find something relevant there.

If Trend Micro has a firewall or anti-virus program, have you turned off or allowed it to turn off the Windows firewall and Windows Defender?

MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) is a big brother to Windows Defender. It is know not to cause problems with Win 7, since Microsoft wrote it. You probably want to keep your software, so we can work on that first but if you can't solve your problem, you may want to go with MSE.

As far as high CPU usage, 13% total CPU time does not seem like a lot considering what you are doing. If it was doing that with nothing else running, it would be high. But if you open and watch Task Manager, go to the Performance tab and click the top of the CPU column, it will list the highest usage utilities first. See what shows up. If you can find some process you think is causing the problem, we may be able to track it down.

From Task Manager, you can also open Resource Monitor. Leave some of these utilities running so you can watch your system.

If you open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) do you show any errors or warnings? If so you can expand the list and double click to bring up the details. Maybe it will lead to more helpful information.

Just to see if you can do it, you might open an administrative command prompt by going to All Programs-Accessories-command prompt and right clicking and selecting "
run as Administrator".

With the window open, type sfc /scannow to run the system file checker. If you are still having some type of permission problems, it should show up during this process.

If you haven't found it already, Win 7 includes a tool that can be very useful during explanation of problems. It is the snipping tool, which is just a screen capture utility. You can copy something and save the picture (GIF) and post it here using the paper clip.

Try with different user

for Windows 7
Click Start -> in start Search Type cmd ->at top you can see cmd black window right click on it->click on run as admin
Type this command in the black window.
"net user administrator /active:yes"
Click start ->Control panel-> User account->again User account->You can see User Account control on or off, Click on it->Drag the scale down to never notify and click ok> Reboot your computer.
login with administror user and check whether it is problem with your current user.

Hi again.

You are not alone in having problems uninstalling the Trend Micro software.
I find literally thousands of posts on this subject.

Many suggest solutions for removing the software.

I'm always a little suspicious of companies that make it so hard to remove their software.
And as Saltgrass suggested you may want to just stick with Microsoft Security Essentials when you get rid of Trend Micro.

One suggestion from "Dell" is to format your hard drive, this seems a little extreme.

Here are a couple of links to sites that suggest ways of uninstalling the software.

I have loaded Trend Micro on my system for testing. I do not know exactly how you have yours set up as far a version and what utilities you might be running, but if you could describe, I will try to duplicate. I am not running the IE add-ons you see in the attachment. If you are, let me know.

It seems the core TM process is taking anywhere from .5 to 2.5% of my CPU time. It does spike when something opens, but the attachments show my system running a couple of minor utilities and streaming a web video. Note the CPU usage.

This install was done after the SP1 update. And I run a 2 core 3.3 GHz processor.

Hi again I ran the sfc/scannow and it stated that there are no integrity violations.I opened up the resource monitor( mind u and i'm laughing here-i haven't a clue what it all means) I have also attached the response and anyway, I cannot turn it off it just hangs around, even Trend's tech couldn't turn it off or shut it down. I have attached the response from Trend's Tech with regard to Uninstalling and re-installing Trend Micro.
Dear Greg,
Unfotunately, the root of all problems are the corrupted processes on your Windows Operating Systems. Uninstalling completely then reinstalling your Trend Micro Program would temporarily solve the problem of your antivirus program but eventually, the problem would still arise after a couple of minutes because of the lack of permissions as well as the other corrupted processes. So it's highly recommended that we fix your Operating System first before continuing with the troubleshooting.
So I'm going to call Microsoft again(didn't) get thru the several times I tried, but I need a patch or something from them.

You do seem to have quite a few errors, but most of them seem to be regarding DHCP. Can you tie the following error you show in your list to any event, like booting?

Error 4/16/2011 12:03:46 PM Dhcp-Client 1001 Address Configuration State Event
If you open the Event Viewer, these errors will show up. If you double click on the error, it will give your more information about the problem.

Right now it is hard to say if your system is messed up or Trend Micro is messing it up.

Let us know what the error says and maybe the DHCP 1002 error also.

I will assume you have normal network connectivity?

If you want me to work on uninstalling Trend Micro, I will do that, but let me know.

Hello Saltgrass,
here are the error msg's from today(? is there anyway i can copy and paste this stuff, i tried but to no avail) anyway here they are;

I looked at the other errors on the days preceeding today and they are all the same.
I have no problem connecting to the net, by the way I first connect with the ISP here which is China Unicom, then I open up a VPN which is ExpressVPN connect through them and away I go free internet( what i mean no sites blocked by the Great Firewall of China)
OK hopefully this info has helped
Kind regards

I am reluctant to ask any more questions considering you current location. Any information you may feel concerned about sharing can be changed enough to cover any specific identities.

Is Unicom your DHCP server? You do not get your computer's address from a local router? I am out of my normal element when your IP address seems to be on different subnets. It may be correct, but I cannot make that determination.

The file athihvs.dll is listed on your error report. When I search for it, I get many "virus" type responses, which is to be expected and some were blocked by Trend Micro. But if you know what the file is you might check to see if there is an update for it or the driver that might be using it. It is located in the Windows\System32 folder, and perhaps right clicking and selecting properties would give you some information.

Have you thought of any event that might be triggering the errors? You might try going for a while without opening the VPN to see if the errors change, but at least start keeping track of the times when you boot, or restart, or sleep or any other activity so you can compare that time against the errors being logged.

Hi Saltgrass,
I checked out that file here is the info; File Description-IHVS.DLL, Type-application extension, File Version-2.0.0.22, Product Name-Atheros IHV Service DLL, Copyright-Copyright 2007,Atheros Communication, Size-388kb, Date Modified-9/12/2010 2:51am, Language-English(USA),Original Filename-ATHIHVS-DLL.
Created-Mar 13,2001.6:42am, Open with-Unknown application

I'll close my VPN and just run with Unicomm to see what error reports I get.at a guess maybe many errors with trying to access websites that they block here and man thats a lot.Question, with the info given prior, could i be compromised?
Thanks for all your help thus far
Greg

Having a problem with too much information might depend on the IP addresses given. If they are your private addresses, you are probably fine, but if they come from a local provider, and you can be identified, I would probably change them to not show a correct address. Go back and edit any posts to scrub any information you feel might be a problem. You do not have to remove it completely, just change some of the numbers.

But I am just guessing, I am not aquainted with your situation.

Hi again,
i restarted and am just using unicomm, only have one error report and thats the 1001 one, same info as before. When I opened up this morning with the VPN same error reports as i forwarded to you yesterday. I don't think though they would have any effect on Trends program though. When i run the scans I'm not connected to the net. What I'll do now is run a scan and see what happens. Yeah China Unicomm is the local provider for me here, but with those msg's with regard to 1001 and from what i can understand it's saying that i cannot get an address, if thats the case then i shouldn't be able to connect. Is that correct? But if thats what it means, then how am i connected.I'm somewhat confused here.

I ran the scan, same hassles as before, it just keeps on running and i cannot stop the damm thing. Could you tell me where i could look in the admin control area to see who, what when or what-ever i can do to change what-ever i have to change? The Trend tech didn't want to try anything in case he stuffed it up and i guess was worried about liability, I couldn't care less about liability, just want this resolved before it becomes 'War and Peace'(regarding length here)
Regards Greg

This is funny because this is the first time you have actually stated what the problem with Trend Micro is. Some types of scans take a very long time. Are you doing a quick scan, it only takes a few minutes on my system.

If you are having delays, maybe some area has a bad file it cannot access. Trend Micro allows you to bypass locations. You might use that ability to scan only certain directories to see if the scan completes normally. You can also pick a folder or file individually and scan it. You may be able to narrow down a problem based on these results.

Trend Micro has a diagnostic utility. You might try that to see if it shows anything strange. It seems to allow for a log to be created that might indicate a problem area. I will try it shortly and get back to you if I notice anything.

You could run a system file check, so the permission problems Trend Micro had might be related to the way you connect to the net.

As far as the other error messages you are getting, it might be good for you to check with some other folks in your area to see if they get them also. It might be a normal situation for your area.

I have been using Trend Micro for a few days with no obvious problems. But, as I mentioned, it was installed after the SP1 update. If you still want to uninstall it and reinstall, it might clear up some problems.

Other than the above, I suggest you, if you haven't already, obtain the latest driver for your network adapter, and any other network utilities you have.

Answer to your question about connectivity after DHCP errors is that the system will keep trying to establish a connection. You will not see a successful action unless you look in the information log, if even there.

I found this when I ran the diagnostic utitily in the Trend Micro Folder on the Start Menu. Maybe it has something to do with why the Techs could not access your system.

Hi,
with the scans, it doesn't matter what scan i run, quick, full or custom. I can leave the computer on for 24 hours and the scan will continue to run they reach 100% or 75% and just hang there. I have been using Trend now for four years, so I understand very well how the scan work.I cannot stop it so i have to shut down the computer. The Trend tech was trying to troubleshoot via a remote link after many days of me sending them various log reports(some worked-some didn't) all manner of fixes, so they,Trend, up-graded my request for help to Level two.The trend tech couldn't fix Trends' scanning problems because he didn't have the required permission access?? and he as i mentioned prior, didn't want to 'tweak' the admin control area.Thats why i came here for help. I used a wireless connection yesterday and my VPN and the only error msg i got was the 1001. Mind you that wireless connection is a work one, not at home. I cannot ask anyone else around me if they have the same hassle(there're all Chinese) language hassles. I'll have to get someone to speak to them.
I think I'll just dump Trend, they cannot help me, I'm getting frustrated with all of this. Thank you very much for all your helo.

What you seem to be seeing is an anomly. This is why I suggested uninstalling Trend Micro, then reinstalling. I do not know what version you have, but an update can make a world of difference.

So, open the Trend Micro folder on the start menu-all programs. Then use the uninstall Trend Micro to remove the program. Reboot your system and then reinstall with the latest version if you so desire.

I once had a program that would stop the search function from working. I found it by watching the folders being searched and noticing which one was taking so long. Trend Micro does the same type of readout. If it does not finish the scans, where does it stop??
