    Hi all,

After formatting my Alienware M17x R3, I started having DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSODs at seemingly random moments.

I was using the drivers on the dell website, so I updated to the most recent drivers.

My Windows 7 64 bits installation is up to date.

Recently, it happens everytime I try shutting down my laptop.

    Thanks all,
    David

Hi and Welcome to The Forum.

    STOP 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
    Usual causes:
    Device driver

Your latest dump files list pci.sys as the probable cause.
This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.
Random stop codes can often indicate hardware issues.

    As a Priority:

dtsoftbus01.sys Fri Jan 13 13:45:46 2012 The dtsoftbus01.sys driver has been known to cause problems on some Windows 7 systems. This belongs to Daemon Tools Light. I suggest uninstalling DT Light until your blue screens are resolved. But do not replace with Daemon Tools!!

May also be worth trying your Power Settings set at High Performance.

Then go to MsConfig.exe, click on the Start up tab, and decide how many of those don't really need to start with Windows as you are big enough to click on an icon to start them running when you need them.

    Thanks for the reply!

My power settings are usually at high performance (I changed them to see if it helped my problem, but it did not).

I was also having BSODs before installing Daemon Tools Lite ... I uninstalled it anyways!

I cleaned up my startup tab ... I usually keep it minimal, but since switching to an SSD, it didn't change much for the boot up time.

So far, after the steps above, I managed to reboot it once without a BSOD ... on five tries!

Well after a few days, I am still having BSODs, although a less frequently.

I am uploading the most recent ones, which happened when the laptop was just rebooted and left there on until it happened (around 15 minutes tops).

Would it be possible to check the other .dmp files I uploaded to see if it's always the same reason for the crashes?

    Thanks in advance.

    All your dump files give:
    STOP 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
    Usual causes:
    Device driver.

All your dump files list pci.sys, the Windows NT Plug and Play PCI Enumerator drver as the probable cause.
For it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.
Random stop codes can often indicate hardware issues.

All your dump files are unable to load symbols for your nVidia graphics drivers.

    As a Priority:

    nvlddmkm.sys Sat Oct 15 07:07:55 2011 nVidia Graphics Drivers.

    • Download and install DriverSweeper.
    • Uninstall your current Graphics setup through Programs and Features
    • Boot to (preferably) Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper to clean up the remnants of your current Graphics set up.
    • Reboot to Normal Mode.
    • Install your new Graphics set up.

Drivers that pre-date Windows 7. Update:

EMSC.SYS Fri Jun 19 21:35:47 2009 Embedded System Control Windows Update. Unusual to find a Windows system driver that pre-dates Win 7, apart from good old secdrv.sys!

You have several Intel drivers that most likely have updates. Use the IntelĀ® Driver Update Utility (in Internet Explorer gives me the best results). Update any and all drivers available.

Go to your Motherboard Mfr. Support website (or NEC/Renesas) and update your USB 3.0 drivers. A June 2011 set are available Here.

    Thank you Elmer!

I successfully uninstalled the Nvidia driver and I installed the driver from the dell website (it's not the most recent, but if i start having BSODs I'll change later).

    Also updated my Intel drivers.

Is there anything I have to do with the EMSC.SYS driver?

I couldn't find the usb driver on the renesas site and the one you linked doesn't work with mine (when i install it, the usb ports don't work).

There were no updates for the Atheros NIC.

Will update if all goes well!

Only make sure your system is fully up to date. Other than that it's a waiting game with MS.

Bummer!! :( Been to your laptop site and the drivers you have are newer than they are offering, so...

    Was worth a try!! :)

    Hi guys!

After a few I have still not had a BSOD! yeah! :D

Many thanks to Elmer for his support and help!

I would just like to add that before posting here, I had already tried reinstalling all my drivers, but without Driversweeper! I will definitely add it to my list of debugging apps! And I also used CCleaner, because it found a few Nvidia registry keys after Driversweeper!

    Thanks again!

Would I be allowed to post my Alienware m17x r3 BSOD crash file here? I don't want to ruffle feathers if I'm in the wrong area, I am new to posting error logs
