On my Vista system, I was able to download the NT-Restore utility from Microsoft to read these files. I need to bring back some files from my dead XP system! :(

On my current Windows 7... 64-bit installation (build 7000 at this point), this utility (the 64-bit file from Microsoft) will not install. It asks me to enable "Removable Storage Management", but there is no such option in Windows 7 that I have found ...

Any recommendations?

It seems like you're encountering issues with the NT-Restore utility on your Windows 7 64-bit system. The "Removable Storage Management" option that the utility is asking for is not a standard feature in Windows 7. Here are a few recommendations to potentially address this issue: 1. Compatibility Mode: Try running the NT-Restore utility in Compatibility Mode. Right-click on the installer, go to Properties, navigate to the Compatibility tab, check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for," and select an older Windows version like Windows Vista or XP. 2. Run as Administrator: Sometimes, administrative privileges are required for certain installations. Right-click on the installer and choose "Run as...

Virtual Machine: Consider setting up a virtual machine with a compatible operating system like Windows XP and install the NT-Restore utility within the virtual environment. 4. Alternative Data Recovery Tools: If the above options do not work, you might want to explore alternative data recovery tools that are compatible with Windows 7 and can help you retrieve files from your dead XP system. Tools like Recuva, TestDisk, or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard could be viable alternatives. Try these suggestions and see if they help you overcome the installation issue with the NT-Restore utility on your Windows 7 64-bit system. If you encounter any specific errors during the process, providing more details could help in offering tailored solutions.
