When I boot up my laptop (Compaq Presario CQ61) I get the windows logo but then it goes to a black screen with the cursor.

I've been into safe mode and unistalled the display drivers which allowed me to boot the laptop normally but then when I allowed the drivers to be reinstalled the problem came back and it now goes to the black screen before it shows the login screen again.

I've tried startup repair and run all the diagnostic checks with no luck.

can anyone help with this?

Thanks

I was on a Dell site the other day and they had info about a specific system that stated a Bios update might be needed for some black screen problems. Maybe check your OEM to see if there are any for your system, and what they might be for.

You could set msconfig.exe, in safe mode, to boot with a basic video so you could get back into Windows, hopefully.

If you are allowing the drivers to be reinstalled, does the Compaq/HP site have drivers available you could load?
