Windows 7 BSOD help

Hi,

I have a very similar problem - random bluescreens with the title MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. No single application seems to be associated with the errors - they occur unexpectedly, sometimes even when I'm not doing anything on the PC. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, an Asus motherboard and 8GB RAM (Kingston, 1333MHz DDR3).

I have already tried to battle the issue for some time - Memtest86+ returns no errors, I've unplugged every device one at a time except for my HDD, and replaced the video card since the errors started (I'm running a couple years old PC which is recently upgraded to an i5 CPU and Win7). I thought I'd solved the problem with the suggestion above - I removed the last one of my RAM sticks (the memory addresses that the stop error pointed to started with FFFF so I assumed the fault was in the last memory stick) and surely the system seemed to run perfectly! Then I tried inserting the faulty stick back in alone, and my PC wouldn't even boot to Windows. I took the stick to the store and got a replacement, and everything worked just fine for a while.

Then the bluescreens returned.

At this point I'm suspecting hardware issues other than the RAM. The motherboard maybe? A lot of users with similar problems seem to have Asus motherboards. The only parts that are still from my old rig are the PSU (a 600W Zalman), the DVD drive, one SATA hard drive (not the OS drive) and the case. The PSU could well be the source of the problem, or the HDD maybe? Is there any way to test them for problems? I already tried monitoring the CPU voltage with SpeedFan, but it didn't show any unusual voltage spikes.

I've changed the DRAM frequency in the BIOS settings from "Auto" to 1333MHz which is the default frequency for my sticks. So far so good, no bluescreen for half an hour...

Hello and welcome.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump

Copy the files in there to any other folder, zip them, then attach the zip here to a post. If Memtest86+ did not show errors, the bios change will not fix the bsods. We must look at your drivers.

As some users with similar problems have reported, there seem to be "stable" and "unstable" boots - yesterday evening my PC worked just fine for several hours, but this morning I got 4 bluescreens within 15 minutes. The software I'm using at the time doesn't seem to have anything to do with the error, and it even occurs when booting in safe mode... I'm suspecting my ASUS motherboard, as many of the users with similar errors seem to have ASUS - but my log files don't have ASACPI.sys which is a "known cause for bluescreens in Win7" according to this thread: BSOD memory_management - Windows 7 Forums

I have already analyzed some of the dump files using Microsoft debugging tools, attached is a zip file with all the dmp files I've got plus a few debugged log files from the last few days. Thanks for any help you can provide!

1) Uninstall notorious Daemon Tools. Then use the installer/uninstaller found here to remove sptd.sys. Do not update while using - simply remove:

DuplexSecure - Downloads

Stable, free (emulation part) replacement:

PowerISO - Create, Edit, Compress, Encrypt, Split, Mount, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter, Virtual Drive

2) Use Driver Sweeper from Guru3d.com, in safe mode, to remove all Creative drivers/software.

These drivers are ancient and a known issue:

CTAUDFX CTAUDFX.DLL Mon Apr 09 09:08:39 2007
CTSBLFX CTSBLFX.DLL Mon Apr 09 09:08:42 2007
ctsfm2k ctsfm2k.sys Mon Apr 09 09:08:11 2007
ctsfm2k ctsfm2k.sys Mon Apr 09 09:08:11 2007
ha10kx2k ha10kx2k.sys Mon Apr 09 09:08:15 2007
ctaud2k ctaud2k.sys Mon Apr 09 09:08:29 2007

Reboot to normal mode and install the latest driver for your hardware from here:

Creative Worldwide Support

3) Update your Realtek lan driver:

Rt64win7 Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 04:04:13 2009

Thanks TorrentG, I'll try these suggestions as soon as possible. The Creative drivers have just recently been installed after I dug out my old Sound Blaster Audigy to get rid of the onboard sound card's poor audio latency - the drivers are only a couple days old while the errors have occurred weeks before. I'll upgrade them anyway!

Realtek HD Audio is top notch, excellent. If you have problems with it, the answer lies someplace else.

Again, those old Creative drivers are known bsod causers. Please follow exactly as I posted for best results and so we can find other causes if need be.

You're welcome.

Alright, I followed the instructions and uninstalled the Creative drivers and Daemon tools lite, and upgraded both the Creative and Realtek drivers mentioned. The PC is stable for now, but it has been since I started these procedures, only time will tell if the bluescreens continue...

Attached are screenshots of CPU-Z Memory and SPD tabs. Take a look and see if there's anything unusual in there!

Thanks. :)

The problem persists. Attempting to install Windows updates caused a BSOD which didn't boot the machine, I had to hard boot by pressing the reset button. Analyzed the dmp file in safe mode, results attached.

I'm running out of ideas here... A lot of people with similar problems seem to be running Asus boards and a 64bit Windows 7, like I do. A common cause for bluescreens is ASACPI.sys driver - I didn't find that one in any of my previous dump files, but the latest one seems to include it. It's not a common denominator in any case...

Any more ideas?

[EDIT] I tried to run a system scan following the instructions here. I ran the scan in safe mode, and launched cmd as administrator. The verification phase of the system scan stops at 48% with the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Would this indicate a corrupt OS file? How to fix it?

Hey ya, post the actual crash dump and not just the code above. Anyhow, install my attachment. It updates the ATK0110 driver, ASACPI.sys to latest, 2009.

Update video card driver:

Attached are two dmp files from today. I'll try updating the drivers you suggested.

I pulled one of my RAM sticks off (from the B2 slot) since some people have had problems with my motherboard model and 8 GB RAM. The PC is running perfectly so far... Will run memtest as well later.

Update ATK0110 ACPI Utility:

ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005
ASUS Support

It's too old for Windows 7 and is high chance the causer of your crashes. Notorious thing.

OK, I updated the ATK0110 ACPI Utility; my display drivers are already up to date. Let's see if it helps... Got another bluescreen a minute ago, but it didn't give me a dump file.

The PC has been running stably for a few days now, let's hope the problem was indeed the old ATK0110 ACPI utility. Thanks for all the help! :)

Seems I celebrated too soon. Another 2 bluescreens within 5 minutes or so, after a week of running perfectly. Different error messages this time, the first BSOD didn't give me a dump file but here's the second one.

Any more ideas?

Done, let's hope it works. Before I managed to do that, there was another BSOD, this time it's MEMORY_MANAGEMENT again. Dump file attached.

[EDIT] I'm not able to run for more than a couple minutes before an error. This time there was no bluescreen visible, the PC just rebooted without warning.

It's getting worse. I left the PC running with no software launched, and it froze by itself - the screen turned black and the system was responding extremely slowly; the windows button appeared after a while, then a few minutes later the taskbar, and then the desktop background. The system was in this state for several minutes until finally it succumbed to another BSOD.

Going to try booting on an Ubuntu LiveCD now, to check if there's some faulty hardware doing all this. I'll run Memtest86+ over the night.

[EDIT] Ubuntu experiences some application crashes, but the system doesn't crash entirely. Firefox crashes when downloading files for some time, and file manager crashes when browsing the HDD. The liveCD loads the entire OS and the apps into RAM, so this might indicate there's indeed something wrong with my physical memory..?

3 Memtest86+ passes on the full 8192MB RAM give me more than 16 million errors. Every error seems to have the same error bits, 00020000. I didn't notice any pattern in the memory address range the errors occur at.

The curious thing is, after my bluescreen problems started I ran Memtest a couple times without a single error. I even replaced two of my RAM sticks after the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT errors persisted. Now the stop errors continue, but it's starting to give errors in Memtest as well? Is there something wrong with my motherboard's memory slots, or is my RAM faulty again?
