Windows 7 BSOD, my nemesis.

Recently purchased a copy of Win 7 Pro x64 to replace my now very old, but well-loved 32 bit XP Pro. Running on a system with a lot of parts "7 ready", I expected an easy transition. However, the BSODs cometh! The one that I am getting comes with the message "A Clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval." The only posts I have been able to find about this specific BSOD are all a couple years old. It happens in normal and safe modes. If it doesn't crash immediately after loading Windows, it will within about one minute of me logging on. In safe mode I can get maybe about 10 mins if I am lucky. It has become impossible to fully update the computer with this happening. And yes, a lot of the drivers may be out of date, as this information was taken from a fresh install, which I tried to no avail (after Win 7 refused to install 4 or 5 times). However, I was getting these from the first install I did of Win 7, which went well with all pertinent updates, and then of course I got the lovely BSODs. Any ideas?

- overclocking
- overheating
- wrong settings in the bios
- bad BIOS
- rarely a bad driver may cause the target CPU core to lock up
- hardware defect or some hardware incompatibility

CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (101)
An expected clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor in an
MP system within the allocated interval. This indicates that the specified
processor is hung and not processing interrupts.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000031, Clock interrupt time out interval in nominal clock ticks.
Arg2: 0000000000000000, 0.
Arg3: fffff88001c5c180, The PRCB address of the hung processor.
Arg4: 0000000000000002, 0.

So, you mentioned hardware defects and I thought to myself that perhaps it could be something with my CPU.

I did some checking around, and found that my particular CPU, the AMD Phenom x4 9600 had a very nasty habit of being shipped with a bad 3rd core. A few BIOS changes later, and the PC is running steady. Time will tell if that's the root of the problem, but for now, things look good. Thankfully, the CPU is still under warranty.

So, to anyone with an AMD Phenom 9600 who is getting that clock interrupt msg, check those cores!

And thanks for the reply, cyber. You gave me just what I needed to nip this in the bud.

Cheers!
