I have a small MS network set up with 3 WinXP SP3 systems connecting to a Win7 system. I set this up back in September and things have been working fine until yesterday afternoon. One of the XP systems lost sight of the shared folders on the Win7 system for some unknown reason. The computer was sitting there on and had been able to see the folders, when suddenly it could not. No new software was added. No existing software was updated. Now the only way I can access the shared folders is by mapping a network drive using the IP number of the Win7 system. No passwords are required to access the Win7 system. No special permissions have been set up for anyone. It was just a simple file sharing network.

I realize it is working and I can just hard code that IP number into the Win7 system and all is well. But what would have caused this and how can I get it back to just browsing for the folders like my users know how to do?

Thanks in advance for any answers/suggestions you can give.

Solution
It sounds like your network setup was running smoothly with shared folders accessible between your Windows XP SP3 systems and the Windows 7 system until one of the XP systems suddenly lost visibility of the shared folders on the Win7 system. Here are a few suggestions on what might have caused this issue and how you can potentially resolve it:

Possible Causes:

  1. Network Discovery Settings: Check if network discovery is enabled on all systems. If network discovery is turned off, it can prevent systems from being visible to each other on the network.
  2. Firewall Settings: Confirm that the firewall settings on both the Windows 7 system and the Windows XP system allow file and printer sharing. Sometimes, security...

Sometimes, security software updates or changes can impact network visibility.
  3. IP Address Conflict: Ensure there are no IP address conflicts within your network. Conflicting IP addresses can disrupt network communication and cause connectivity issues.

    Steps to Resolve the Issue:

  4. Check Network Discovery:
    • On Windows 7, go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings. Make sure network discovery is turned on.
    • On Windows XP, open My Network Places > View network connections. Right-click on the network adapter and select Properties. Ensure that "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing" are enabled.
    []Verify Firewall Settings:
    • Temporarily disable the firewall on both the Win7 and XP systems to see if the issue is related to firewall settings. If disabling the firewall resolves the problem, you may need to adjust firewall rules to allow file sharing.
    [
    ]Check IP Addresses:
    • Confirm that each device on the network has a unique IP address. You can do this by checking the IP settings in the network adapter properties on each system.
    []Reset Network Settings:
    • Restart the network adapter on the XP system, reset network settings, and then try to rediscover the shared folders.
    [
    ]Update Network Drivers:
    • Ensure that network drivers on all systems are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause network connectivity issues.
  5. Recreate the Shared Folders:
    • If the issue persists, try recreating the shared folders on the Win7 system and reconfigure sharing settings. By checking these aspects and performing the suggested actions, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue of the XP system losing visibility of the shared folders on the Win7 system. If you need further assistance or encounter any specific errors, feel free to provide additional details for more in-depth troubleshooting.
