A would-be robber who made a failed attempt to hold up a Jack in the Box restaurant was arrested when he returned to the same restaurant the next day, San Diego police said.

The man walked in to the Jack in the Box on Wednesday and demanded cash from an employee, saying he had a gun. He had his hand in a pocket simulating a weapon but never showed it to the employee, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said.

When the cashier could not locate a key to open the cash register, the suspect left, Brown said.

The same man walked into the fast-food eatery Thursday morning and asked for a water cup. The restaurant manager was nearby, discussing an unrelated incident with plain-clothes detectives, Brown said.

"Hey, that's the guy who tried to rob us yesterday," the manager told detectives, according to Brown. "The detectives detained him, looked at the surveillance video from the day before and said, 'That's him.' "

The suspect was identified as Shawn Dustin Page, 30. He was also identified as a suspect in two recent robberies of a Wells Fargo bank in the same neighborhood as the restaurant, Brown told AOL News.

The Wells Fargo robberies occurred on Feb. 24 and Tuesday. In those instances, a suspect entered the bank and used demand notes to obtain money. One of the robberies involved the use of a gun.

"He lives close by in the area, so it was really just a matter of time before we arrested this young man," Brown said.
