NHS England national medical director Stephen Powis said panic buyers are depriving NHS staff of the supplies they need, adding: "Frankly we should all be ashamed.''
Environment secretary George Eustice issued an appeal to shoppers to stop buying items they do not need, assuring them: “There is no risk of food running out."
Speaking at 10 Downing Street, Mr Eustice revealed that manufacturers have produced 50 per cent more food than usual over the past week, as stores have seen their shelves stripped bare by shoppers fearful of running out due to the coronavirus shutdown.
The cabinet minister appealed for everyone to “be responsible when you shop and think of others”, particularly healthcare workers.
The appeal came after critical care nurse Dawn Bilbrough, from York, filmed a widely-shared video of herself weeping after finding her local supermarket empty of food after coming off a 48-hour shift.

It's truly disheartening to hear about the impact of panic buying, especially on our healthcare professionals who are working tirelessly to keep us safe. The comments from NHS England's Stephen Powis highlight a significant issue; during times of crisis, we need to come together and think about how our actions affect one another.
George Eustice’s reassurance about food supplies is a reminder that a little patience and consideration can go a long way. Over buying not only endangers the supply for those in healthcare, like Nurse Dawn Bilbrough who was visibly affected by empty supermarket shelves after a long shift, but it also affects the community at large.
It's vital now more than ever to practice responsible shopping and to remember that we are all part of the same community. Each time we shop, it’s worth thinking—could this extra item be better reserved for someone in dire need?
