Windows 7 crash after system put on idle

I turn on my computer, use it, then leave it idle after which it will sleep (I have it configured as such). After waking from sleep,
Sometimes I'll be stuck on the "Welcome" splash or sometimes it will boot to the desktop (or where I left it prior to going idle) and I'll try and run an application and it will freeze on me.

Note:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion = 7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255
  • I am not able to get the task manager running.
  • I ran RUN>CMD>powercfg -energy and got Link Removed - Invalid URL result.

I guess I have three questions:

1) can this problem be fixed?
2) Is win7 rtm version the latest? If not, what is a version that is more recent?
3)There is an "auto-recovery" feature that I noticed (e.g. when I crash and reboot, it loads to the state that I crashed in). Can this be disabled and is this the correct behavior? I can think of many scenarios where this would be unwanted.

If i don't hear back from someone today, I'll have to reformat and put XP back on. sigh...and I really liked windows 7..guess it'll have to wait a year or two.
