Windows 7 Desktop icons gone...

Hi there, for some reason my desktop items have gone, i have tried right clicking desktop then going to personalization then the desktop icon settings and I have made sure that computer and recycle bin is ticked but it makes no difference. I have also looked at my desktop folder via explorer and it says i have things in that folder but there is nothing on my desktop at all. I also can't select anything by drawing a box by clicking then dragging the mouse as no box appears when i do this, if any one could help i would be very grateful, thanks!

Right-click on the desktop,choose View >Show Desktop icons.
