Windows 7 Disabling Mic Volume In Headsets?

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance on this topic, but I'm brand new user to Win 7 and I'm completely stumped.

All I want to do (if possible) is mute the mic volume to my headset when I speak. The mic works fine, but there is about a half second of lag between when I speak and when I actually hear my voice in the headset which makes it sound like I'm in an echo chamber.

Is there a simple fix for this in the Hardware/Sound section of the Control Panel that I'm somehow missing?

MORE INFO: My mic-headset combo is generic and the sound controller I have is Realtek HD Audio Manager.

Thanks.
