Windows Vista Disappearing Files

I am running Vista Home Ultimate. I have had a number of files, mostly jpegs disappear. They are not in the Recycle bin and I did not deliberately delete them. The only thing I have done that is unusual is to clear out the "Recent Items" list. Could that have deleted the files?

I just did a test whereby I "cleared" an item off the Recent Items list and it appears to have been deleted from the hard drive as well as removed from the Recent Items list. This does not seem to be a good practice.

Hmm...come to think of it I'm sure I made the same mistake a while back. The only thing I can think of trying is using the search function..
