I wanted to make sure I had the fastest connection for my lap top thru my home desktop so I purchased a Netgear "N" router. I had a router supplied by Verizon and I had the "Geek Squad" from Best Buy hook it up. They did not remove the original router but hooked up my new router in parallel or series, not sure about either. Is this the proper way to hook up this router or did they take a shortcut? It seems that my laptop is not much faster than what it was in the beginning. Almost feel like I am using a phone hookup as far as speed.

Solution
It sounds like you may have a networking setup that involves having two routers connected in series or in parallel. Ideally, when setting up a new router like the Netgear "N" router, the typical approach is to replace the existing router provided by Verizon with the new one. Here are a few common scenarios for setting up a new router:
  1. Replace the Existing Router (Preferred Method):
    • Disconnect the Verizon router.
    • Connect the Netgear router directly to the modem provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
    []Bridge Mode:
    • The Verizon router can be set to Bridge Mode, essentially disabling its routing functions and allowing the Netgear router to handle all the routing duties. This way, the...

]Dual Router Setup (Not Recommended for Most Home Users):
    • If both routers are left active, there may be issues with double NAT (Network Address Translation) which can cause speed and connectivity issues. Now, regarding the current setup with both routers being active, there are a few potential issues:
      • Double NAT: This occurs when both routers are performing NAT, leading to potential conflicts and slower speeds.
      • Signal Interference: Having both routers active can lead to signal interference and reduced performance.
      • Suboptimal Routing: Traffic may not be taking the most efficient path between your laptop and the internet due to having two routers.
To address your concerns about speed, it's recommended to:
      • Check Router Configuration: Verify that the Netgear router is properly configured for your network.
      • Disable Unused Router: If feasible, try disconnecting the Verizon router temporarily to see if it improves speed.
      • Network Diagnostics: Use tools like speed tests to determine if the issue is with the network connection itself.
If needed, you may consider consulting with a network specialist or contacting the Geek Squad for further assistance in optimizing your network setup for better performance.
