Hey Windows enthusiasts! The Windows Insider Program is entering its 9th year in 2023, and there are exciting changes ahead to enhance your experience with upcoming Windows features. Amanda from the Windows Insider team has shared some groundbreaking updates, especially the creation of a new Canary Channel and a rebooted Dev Channel. Here’s a deep dive into what’s changing and how it affects you.
Key Updates
Introducing the Canary Channel The new Canary Channel is designed for highly technical users who want to preview platform changes that require a longer lead time before general release. This could include majorupdates to the Windows kernel or new APIs. Builds from the Canary Channel will have higher build numbers (starting with the 25000 series) and are almost immediately released after being built, meaning they’ll have minimal validation and documentation. Note that these builds might come with significant stability issues. Dev Channel Rebooted The Dev Channel has been rebooted to become the primary space for testing new features and experiences not tied to a specific Windows release. It will now feature 23000 series builds and aims to provide better platform stability than the Canary Channel. This channel is still ideal for users
eager to try out the latest Windows features, albeit with some rough edges.
Channel Breakdown
- Canary Channel: Ideal for highly technical users. It provides early previews of platform changes but can be unstable and lacks extensive documentation.
- Dev Channel: Recommended for enthusiasts. You get the latest Windows 11 preview builds as new ideas and long-lead features are incubated. Stability might be lower, but it’s better than the Canary Channel.
- Beta Channel: Best for early adopters. These builds are more reliable than Dev Channel builds and are validated by Microsoft.
- Release Preview Channel: Suited for users wanting to preview fixes
and key features of the upcoming Windows version before general availability. This is also recommended for commercial users.Steps for Insiders
Now is a pivotal time for Windows Insiders to reassess their channel preferences: - Dev to Canary Migration: Current Dev Channel users receiving 25000 series builds will be moved to the Canary Channel automatically. Notifications will be sent via the OS and email.
Switching Channels: Switching from a channel with higher build numbers to one with lower build numbers (e.g., Canary to Dev) will require a clean installation of Windows 11. Microsoft will provide limited documentation for the Canary Channel
