i tried myself to set up file sharing between my win 7 home edition 64 bit desktop with my xp pro laptop. but, now win 7 identifies the xp as a music media server and not as a computer. i do have a media server installed on the xp (tversity). what i would like to do is undo what i did. and redo it by following directions i found.

Home group only works with Windows 7 computers. You'll have to setup a home network with a work group just like in XP. and make sure they all have the same work group name.
