All,

I'm attempting to use Windows 7 Ultimate as and FTP server. I have installed the FTP server and it looks like everything is working on the server itself. I can open an ftp session from either command line or through my browser while directly on the host server. When I attempt to connect from another PC on the same internal network (192.168.1.*), I get a connection timeout error. I can ping the host server from my remote client. I have turned off any firewalls on both sides.
I also assigned the ftp host server a static IP address. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

Solution
Scott, Running into connection timeout errors when trying to connect to your FTP server on Windows 7 Ultimate from another PC on the same internal network can be frustrating. Let's troubleshoot this step by step to identify the possible causes of the issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Windows Firewall Settings:
    • Even though you mentioned that you turned off firewalls, it's worth double-checking the Windows Firewall settings on both the host server and the client PC. Sometimes the firewall settings might not have been disabled properly.
    []Verify FTP Server Configuration:
    • Ensure that the FTP server service is configured to accept connections from devices on the same network. Check the FTP...

Check the FTP server configuration settings to ensure it's not restricting connections.
    [
    ]Network Configuration:
    • Confirm that the network settings, including the subnet mask, on both the FTP server and the client PC are correctly configured to be on the same network (192.168.1.*).
    []Static IP Address:
    • Recheck the static IP address settings on the FTP host server to make sure it matches the internal network's IP range (192.168.1.*).
    [
    ]Passive FTP Mode:
    • Try switching the FTP server to passive mode and see if that allows the connection. Passive mode can sometimes help with firewall and NAT issues.
    []FTP Port Forwarding:
    • If you're still facing issues, consider setting up port forwarding on the router to direct FTP traffic to the server's static IP address.
    [
    ]Network Trace:
    • Perform a network trace or use tools like Wireshark to check the network traffic between the client and server. This can help identify where the connection is failing.
    []FTP Passive Ports Range:
    • If using passive mode, ensure that the passive ports range on the FTP server is properly configured and not blocked by any firewall.
    [
    ]Restart Services:
    • Restart the FTP server service on the Windows 7 Ultimate machine to ensure that any changes made are applied properly.

      Additional Information:

    • Windows 7 End of Support:
    • Keep in mind that Windows 7 has reached its end of support. Consider upgrading to a newer and supported operating system for better security and stability. If you go through these steps and are still facing issues, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
