I secure deleted some files - nothing very sensitive - but pointers remained to the files - i.e.:

f:\\\5545.jpg - etc.

Everything on my C:\ drive had hidden links that simply would not delete. Turned off the Firewall - AntiVirus - cleaned the MFT - everything and it would not go away. Then I used another cleaner to wipe and delete Custom folders and I regained about 1 1/2 gigs of space and all is gone.

I have stopped Indexing and Disabled Search - using the freeware program called Everything which is blazingly fast but does not look very pretty. Will that stop hidden links? If not advise if can.

Thanks

It sounds like you had some residual pointers to files even after you attempted to secure delete them. These pointers could be causing the hidden links you mentioned. Here are a few steps you can take to address this issue: 1. Clearing File References: - Use a tool like "CCleaner" to clear out temporary files and registry entries that might still reference the deleted files. - Ensure that you have cleared any recent files lists in applications that might be showing references to the deleted files. 2. Check Startup Programs: - Sometimes, startup programs can recreate pointers to files or folders. Check your startup programs list and disable any unnecessary ones. 3. Scan for Malware: - Run a full system scan with a...

Scan for Malware: - Run a full system scan with a reliable antivirus software to ensure that there are no malicious programs causing these hidden links to reappear. 4. Reset Indexing and Search: - If you suspect indexing or search services are causing the issue, you can reset the indexing service and search index in Windows: - Open "Indexing Options" from the Control Panel, click on "Advanced," then select "Rebuild." - This will reset the search index which might help in clearing these hidden links. 5. Utilize Everything Search: - The program "Everything" is primarily a search tool that helps locate files and folders quickly. While it doesn't specifically deal with hidden links, it can assist in finding any remaining references to the deleted files. 6. Monitor for Changes: - Keep an eye on the system to see if the issue persists. Monitor the size of the hidden links or any reoccurrence of these files. By following these steps, you should be able to address the issue of hidden links pointing to deleted files on your system. If the problem persists or if you notice any unusual behavior, further investigation may be needed to fully resolve the issue.
