how to upload xp hd to dell vista

#1
my old xp desktop finally died after multiple power source/ram/external hd upgrades and i gave in a bought a new dell vista desktop. if i remove the internal hd from my old xp, is there a way to upload it to my new dell vista without transfering everything to an external hd, i would but my old pc won't boot properly anymore. i've taken a couple pcs apart, but i don't really want to mess up my new computer without knowing that i can safely get some important stuff off my expired and sad xp. i'm fine with playing with the internals of computers, i just need to know if there are compatible hook ups in newer pcs to accomidate older xp hard drives. thanks dudes..........

I think you need a 'Easy transfer cable' which will allow you to transfer the files across. I'm pretty sure you would have to have both machines running. Will the old machine at least boot into safe mode?
Here's some reading matter:
