I insert a CD containing the iso for installing Linux Mint.
    I get an error message:

EDD: Error 3200 reading sector 455274
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
    boot:

I have tried 3 different versions of Min and all exhibit the same error.

    Any clues?

Don't check on this forum ever, so you've probably moved on from this problem. May be a compatibility issue as well. How old is this HP, model number? You could try either a different distribution, perhaps Mageia. Or you could try Unetbootin to make a bootable usb drive and try that, in case it's the media or disk drive.
